Hull Reclaim The Streets Carnival 8th May 1999 - Report

Twelve anti-road campaigners from Newcastle travelled down to Hull on 8 May to take part in the third annual reclaim the streets carnival. Around 300 pedestrians, skate-boarders and cyclists took control of one of Hull's busiest road junctions after police attempted to cordon off the main approach to the city centre. A happy party atmosphere quickly developed as people danced in the streets to a sound system; children played Frisbee and chalked pictures on the road others just sat around in the sun. Spokesperson for the activists, Les Rhodes said 'We took back a bit of space which is normally for cars and turned it into a play ground for the afternoon. If it can happen in Hull, why not Newcastle?'
