Castle Area Campaign in the City of York - July 2002

YORK PLANNING MADNESS

York Council has given planning permission for a huge shopping complex to be built on both sides of the River Foss. Crucially, this means building right next to the ancient monument of Clifford's Tower and the Castle Museum. The people of York have never been properly consulted and most are strongly against the development according to recent surveys on the Tower.

However, York Council has thrown out plans for a public park, presumably because they wouldn't get their grubby hands on the money from the sale of the land. Clifford's Tower is an important historical monument attracting tourists from all over the world. Already, letters of objection to the shopping complex proposal have been received from Canada, USA, Israel, Australia, Germany, France and Uruguay.

Add your letter of objection to the proposal by writing to the Inspector, Mr Bingham, quoting ref. APP/C2741/V/01/000267, and send to The Planning Inspectorate, FAO Ms Marcia Dean, Temple Quay House, 2 The Square, Bristol, BS1 6PN.
