Postcards From Spain (To Michael Lorimer) - Thea Musgrave (born 1928) II. Starlight on Compostela (Santiago de Compostela) Five Serenades for solo guitar (2nd edition, Lorimer, Novello 120809, 1997) MIDI: http://www.classtab.org/musgrave_postcards_from_spain_2_starlight_on_compostela.mid see Notes and Legend below the tab - tabbed by weed@wussu.com - 3 February 2018 "The starry sky, summoned forth here by the clear timbres of harmonics, illuminates the enormous, baroque cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, a city that exists simply because of faith in a miracle. Legend says that St James's body, after having been beheaded by Herod, was wondrously transported in seven days by the Saint's disciples to northern Spain, where it lay forgotten for hundreds of years. In 813, starlight guided a shepherd to a site, on which he discovered the Saint's remains. Over this spot stands the cathedral erected during the 11th, 12th and 13th centuries, in which the relics of St James are entombed, and to which hundreds of millions of pilgrims have journeyed from the middle ages until today." - Neverthless, it is always possible to communicate the composer's intention, and therefore the score is presented in this edition as Thea Musgrave wrote it, and as she hopes the listener will imagine it, rather than as a precise depiction of the literal sound that one performer might produce. The ears of the listener, rather then the fingers of the performer, guide the fingering. Whilst this fingering is a model that pleases the composer and the editor, the score is presented as the composer conceived it, and other fingerings are possible." - Michael Lorimer (editor) Suggested duration: 1 min 45 sec left hand fingering below the tab - 1 - index finger 2 - middle finger 3 - ring finger 4 - little finger === - note held, length of note, duration > - (above the tab) accented, stressed - - tenuto - note held for at least its full length, or a little longer |-3-| - triplet - 3 notes played in the time of 2 notes arp. - arpeggiate - ripple upwards from the lowest note to the highest note p - (between the notes) pull-off pizz. - pizzicato - muted (usually achieved by plucking the string with the right thumb and using the palm of the hand to mute the sting) <5> - natural (open) harmonic on the 5th fret (double octave) <7> - natural (open) harmonic on the 7th fret <9> - natural (open) harmonic on the 9th fret <12> - natural (open) harmonic on the 12th fret (octave) <19> - natural (open) harmonic on the 19th fret 2<14> - artificial harmonic - left hand 2nd fret, right hand points to 14th fret 5<17> - artificial harmonic - left hand 5th fret, right hand points to 17th fret 9<21> - artificial harmonic - left hand 9th fret, right hand points to 21st fret CII - barre on the 2nd fret cVII - part barre on the 7th fret cX - part barre on the 10th fret expressions (below the tab) - < < - crescendo, growing louder > > - decrescendo, growing softer cresc. - growing louder dim. - diminuendo - diminishing, gradually getting softer eco - echo - repeat the previous passage in a softer tone mf - mezzoforte - moderately loud mp - mezzopiano - moderately soft p - piano - soft pp - pianissimo - very soft ppp - pianississimo - extremely soft ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ see the latest version of this tab at http://www.classtab.org
